LOAN Wr. Neustadt East

The Civil Airfield Wiener Neustadt / East is located northeast of the city of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. Operator of the airfield is the aircraft manufacturer Diamond Aircraft. The airport has one asphalt runway 1067 meters long. It is home of several flying clubs and schools.

It is an uncontrolled aerodrome, at the arrivals and departures only under visual flight conditions are possible. However, there is a so-called "cloud-breaking procedure," in which an instrument approach to a height of about 420 m is possible above the ground. The normal operating hours are from 9:00 am local time to ECET, not later than 22:00 local time. Exceptions are possible with prior approval of the airport manager. Unofficially the Wednesday night is night-flight-day.

The airfield is the Aviation Museum Aviaticum connected, which gives an overview of the Austrian aviation history in many austrian objects.

In addition, the company Schiebel is located here.

The airfield is one of the sites of the Christophorus flight rescue association since 1984 with the two helicopters Christophorus 3 and Christophorus 33 ITH. This is run as a separate airfield with the identifier LOAW. A private approach procedure is installed here.

The base of Christophorus 3 is located on the northern outskirts of Wiener Neustadt on the grounds of the airport "Wiener Neustadt Ost" (LOAN).

Die Geschichte von Christophorus 3

Christophorus 3 was put into service on September 15, 1984. "Spiritual father" of the base is Prim. IR Dr. Friedl Weiss,. During his time as head of the casualty department at the hospital Wr Neustadt, together with former mayor Gustav Kraupa the way to commissioning of the base paved. The first machine in Wiener Neustadt was an Ecureuil AS355. At the beginning they flew the service from the hospital Wr. Neustadt. But after two months, the readiness was moved to the base at the airfield east, because the stakes were always more.

In the following years Christophorus 3 was rapidly to become part and parcel institution in the emergency medical care of the Southern Lower Austria, Burgenland and Eastern Styria. The operations moving toward 1,000 per year, of which about ¾ primary rescue flights were and about 15-20% transfer flights ("secondary transport" between hospitals of different levels of care). In 5-10% of cases there was failure vocations - applications where no medical help was required, although the rescue coordination center had to go out because of the message of the immediate threat to life. The base, which was housed in one wing of the large hangars at the airfield east, no longer met the requirements over the years. In addition among a growing number of private aircraft, the space available for the helicopter in the hangar was always lower.

Finally, in 1993, a separate base was built for Christopher's emergency helicopter, the helicopter crew and posed for a safe and all requirements of the team fairly nascent "home". Due to new, Europe-wide rules of aviation increased demands were placed on technology and operational arrangements of commercial helicopter operations (JAR-OPS). The ÖAMTC responded and turned his fleet from 1998 onwards to a new, more powerful type of helicopter, the Eurocopter EC135 to.

By taking over the air ambulance by the "Federal Ministry of the Interior" to create one of the great helicopter fleet corresponding ground infrastructure was necessary as technical and logistics center.

In a built-up area of over 1,500 square meters have five hangars as well as accommodations for the use of crews Christophorus 3, the ITH (intensive care transport helicopter) and the helicopter technology. In the hangar 3, 4 and 5, the helicopter maintenance is performed according to the European aviation policies from ÖAMTC own maintenance operation (HeliAir).
